China\u2019s television regulator has imposed new limitations on international format adaptations that may affect the future of such programs as The Voice of China<\/em>. According to new regulation Channel\/s that air international adaptations without the necessary approval will\u00a0be banned from broadcasting foreign-adapted programs for one year.<\/p>\n In its most recent bid to bolster local production, the State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television (SAPPRFT) now requires that satellite channels secure local regulator approval prior to broadcasting imported programs.<\/p>\n In addition, channels\u00a0can now broadcast only two primetime programs based on foreign formats each year. Further, only one program being shown in China for the first time may be broadcast per year, and not in primetime slots.<\/p>\n The latest rules \u2013 first reported in the state-run China.com \u2013 will affect such shows\u00a0as\u00a0The Voice of China<\/em>, which is based on Talpa\u2019s international hit format.<\/p>\n Elsewhere, Endemol Shine China and Shenzhen Satellite Television teamed up\u00a0in March to bring thriller format\u00a0Hunted\u00a0– originally produced by Endemol Shine UK for Channel 4 \u2013 to China.<\/p>\n \u201cCertain broadcasters are still too dependent on foreign programming methods, and the proportion of original programs is comparatively small, high quality is rare, the programs have a small influence\u2026and they have restricted the healthy development of broadcast programming,\u201d reads a statement from SAPPRFT.<\/p>\n The regulator further noted that broadcasters should \u201cearnestly implement\u201d the ideology outlined in Chinese president Xi Jinping\u2019s recent call to form\u00a0a culture of self-improvement that \u201cvigorously pushes\u201d for independent, innovative TV\u00a0programs and the development of independent IP rights that inform Socialist literature and art.<\/p>\n SAPPRFT is known to place restrictions on television production, and has in the past instituted various quotas on international formats and domestic content airing in prime-time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" June 20, 2016 China\u2019s television regulator has imposed new limitations on international format adaptations that may affect the future of such programs as The Voice of China.
